Live Set: The Songs of 108 Birch Way

Image
The Songs of 108 Birch Way Stream on Mixlr On Christmas Day 1989, Glen and I went out for coffee at Perkin's in East St. Paul, Minnesota. I invited him out to convince him to move to California with me. We must have been there three hours, but we left that place caffeinated and with a plan to move to Marin County in three months. Glen's good friend Nick already lived there and Nick was willing to rent a house with us, and he got us set up - after "the camper days" (we lived in a camper at his mom's for 3 days upon arrival from our Greyhound trip from MN) - in a house in Santa Venetia (aka Scabo) at 108 Birch Way. From April 1st thru September of 1990, we fit more parties and good times in that place.... we can't say we didn't make the most of it. And we survived. A few years ago, Nick made a 17-song mix of a sort of a Greatest Hits from that summer, which you can download here. It is the definitive mix.  My mix consists of 30 songs - not all great songs,...

The 17 Series: The Sugarcubes

Image
The 17 Series: The Sugarcubes (Nick) The period of The Sugarcubes brief existence, a bit before 88 up until 92, coincided nicely with my discovery and early appreciation for weed and LSD. My music listening habit is typically to obsess deeply over one band at a time, and for those years it was The Sugarcubes. They were the band that I couldn’t wait until the next album came out - and when it did, that album would be on repeat for weeks. I only got to enjoy 2 of those “next albums” - they only have 3 - but damn, what albums they are! When I got to see them live, it was one of the most exciting concerts I have ever seen. A huge part of the band's appeal, of course, is Bjork. I won't bore you with how much I loved her, but she blew my mind when this band came out. I didn't initially follow Bjork into her solo career. I suppose I was miffed, and the music was different. Of course she gets the spotlight in The Sugarcubes, but her vocal partner Einar Orn is no slouch. He's...

The 17 Series: Hall & Oates

Image
The 17 Series: Hall & Oates (Shlep) Hi all,Sorry to submit one so closely on the heels of Glen's Blondie 17, but considering most of us are living in a frozen stay-at-home Saturday night kind of life today, I figured a 1-2 punch of Blondie and Hall & Oates might be just what the doctor ordered for tonight.  I recommend a bottle of cognac for some reason. Anyway, my Hall & Oates 17 is light on the hits, and 11 of the 17 songs are from the 1970s, not their heyday in the 1980s.  I really dig it.  You may notice I just let the alphabet sequence them.  Enjoy!

The 17 Series: Blondie

The 17 Series: Blondie (Glen) So many amazing songs leaves me wanting to do a part 2 - which if i do, will include Debbie's solo material.

The 17 Series: Cheech & Chong

The 17 Series: Cheech & Chong (Craig) At the tender and impressionable age of about 13 or so, my buddy Aaron and I discovered Cheech and Chong through the older brothers of kids who lived on our cul-de-sac. We got a hold of their Los Cochinos/Big Bambu LPs and played them endlessly, laughing at humor we were only beginning to understand. We were also impressed by the adventures in stereo that we were both starting to pay more attention to in the rock music of the 70s we were also discovering at the time. This, btw, had an effect on our own future music recordings that occasionally featured atmospheric sound fx and buried audio nuggets. So, Cheech & Chong with legendary rock producer Lou Adler created these hilarious environments such as classrooms, drive-in movies, sports arenas, city streets, etc., it was really heady stuff for the stoner crowd. We began to know these records inside and out and would often act out the skits on the front law to other kids, then record them on ...
