The 17 Series: St. Vincent

Image
The 17 Series: St. Vincent (Nick) Annie Clark is the real deal, an all-around cool art rocker with a voice like an angel and a one-of-a-kind guitar playing style. She has half a dozen solid albums under her belt and a resume that includes time with The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens. Of the artists currently putting out music, she may be my favorite. Definitely top 5.

The 17 Series: Suede

Image
The 17 Series: Suede (Glen) I would like to state a few songs that I wanted to include beyond the 17 limit, that y'all can explore later.. My Heroine  So young  Barriers Daddy’s speeding  Elephant man We are the Pigs  Crack in the Union Jack  My Dark Star “she will come from India with love in her eyes” and a couple I already played in my past DJ sets (Indian Strings, HiFi) Outside the stunning songwriting and guitar work, Suede's music is soaked in Brit culture, operatic flash  and theatricality and seems to be an homage to Bauhaus, Bowie, mott the hoople and Oscar Wilde. Almost every album has a different theme, in the way that the 'Stones use a rock base and play with styles around that. Suede keeps their base in glam and plays with styles / themes around that anchor. Also, like the 'Stones they switched guitarists early in their career to their further success. Without a death though, lol. And themes of death, car crashes, chaos, fire,...

The 17 Series: Public Enemy

Image
The 17 Series: Public Enemy (Nick) Public Enemy is. of course, one of the great rap groups, although I don't really categorize them specifically as rap. I'm not saying to myself. "Gee, I'm in the mood for some rap music! I'm going to throw on some PE" No. They occupy the same zone and vibe in my mind as Jane's Addiction and other hard, aggressive moods. Chuck D and Perry Farrell are not that far apart (in my mind anyway) with the themes in their lyrics. Chuck D (and Perry) are in a group of about 10 or less songwriters and performers that are my inspirational and motivational heroes. Musically, they align with one of my other faves, Norman Cook/Fatboy Slim. The beats and samples that Terminator X weaves in layers and layers give me the same rush of energy and joy. Being the greatest hype man in rap music would certainly be enough - but Flavor Flav is a more than competent MC and leads on 3 tracks here.  I can think of no other band that can pick me up t...
