Live Set: Bob's Yer Uncle

Image
Stream the Show Download the Songs A couple of months ago, after a Shlep Music Club set, Craig and I decided to collaborate on the set that we're presenting this Friday under the title "Bob's Yer Uncle", which is a British phrase meaning "and there you have it." Why did we name it that? I honestly can't recall. There are a few Bobs in it, but the logic behind it is lost to the martinis that wore off long ago. The set was initially gonna be Kraut-rock inspired, then added ingredients kept coming -- no-wave, prog in general, proto-punk. In the end, the set is really just gonna consist of a wide array of music that we both like. Hope you join us!

Live Set: Strong Women in Music

Image
Stream the Show Download the Songs Hi Shleppers!  This set has been a passion project for me.  It chronicles outstanding female musicians who have changed the world of music.  I skipped most of the “obvious” options. So, with my apologies, there is no  Dolly Parton/Madonna/Joni Mitchell/Stevie Nicks/Tina Turner/Diana Ross/Aretha Franklin /Linda Ronstadt/Gloria Estefan/Joan Baez/Carole King/Janis Joplin/Cher/Debbie Harry/Whitney Houston /Queen Latifah/Selena/Mariah Carey/Beyoncé/Lady Gaga/Taylor Swift But there is an amazing journey from the original rock and roll song all the way to current bands.  The set only looks at female singers and female bands who paved the way and made changes.   I hope you love it as much as I do!

Live Set: Geno II

Stream the Show Download the Songs When: Friday, March 1st at 7 Pacific, 8 Mountain, 9 Central, 10 Eastern Where:  shlepmusicclub.mixlr.com Who: Geno-- the oldest friendship I have... we met on Tuesday, December 9, 1980... the day after John Lennon was murdered What: Some cool, fun tracks that will take you back... make you rock... and if drunk enough, maybe shed a tear. Why: Because we like you. From Geno: I don't really have a theme, the set I made is just a mix of music from a guy that spent a lot of time watching TV in the 70s and listening to FM radio in the 80's.  Those pics-- Geno circa mid-1980s

The 17 Series: World Party

Image
Karl Wallinger, the musician that recorded as World Party, and who was a member of The Waterboys during the mid-1980s, passed away last week at age 66. No cause of death was announced, though his recording career was derailed back in 2001 due to a brain aneurysm. Prior to that misfortune though, he released five World Party albums, starting with 1987's Private Revolution and ending with 2000's Dumbing Up.   I was a huge fan. The debut album, which features the great song "Ship of Fools" brings me back to Minneapolis and resurrects such clear memories of my girlfriend Autumn. The second album, 1990's Goodbye Jumbo reminds me of Nick and Glen and our first summer in Marin. "Put the Message in a Box" was a constant through that summer. His 1993 album, Bang , is my favorite and, again, strikes crystal clear memories of that year. "Is It Like Today?" is my favorite song of his and was on that album.  I saw him perform in San Francisco that year at

Live Set: Refracting Sound Mixtape: Volume 1

Stream the Show Download the Songs From Walter: "  Welcome to the Refracting Sound Mixtape Volume 1. There’s no overarching theme here: there is a nod to Black History Month, although I listen to Black music (is there any other kind?) all year ‘round. I did tone down some of the more inaccessible music I listen to, but you’re going to get some of that as well. That being said, enjoy the ride! Special thanks to Chris and Nick for all their work with this."

Live Set: Chicago! (that toddling town)

Image
Stream the Show Download the Songs Shlep proposed to me that we split a set of Chicago artists, and I was more than happy to oblige!  My first awareness of Chi-Town was in 2nd grade. My teacher, Mr. Steffus (a swingin' bachelor who flirted with our braless music teacher Miss Ohnsorg) was about to take a weekend trip to Chicago. He was so giddy with excitement that he told us and sang the Sinatra song in class. Much more recently, the Chicago area has taken on importance as a frequent destination to visit Rachel's family and friends. So, join us. Half Chris, half Nick, all Chicago artists, all fun!
